Final Blog Assignment

I can honestly say I really enjoyed this class. At the beginning of the course, I found the course to be very intimidating. Looking at the syllabus the first day of class was very scary. I thought this class was gonna be nothing more than teaching how to use Microsoft Word. I had know idea I would be doing a podcast, blog, Google Earth project and many more. All the stuff we did in this class will prepares me to be able to teach with our evolving world due to technology. (question 4) This class was exciting to me. I use to hate computers, but now I have a great appreciation for what all computers can do. The only thing I would change about the course is to make the syllabus easier to understand.(question 7) As far as the work load, I really never felt that I was overwhelmed during the semester. It is a lot of work, but it teaches you time management. The course also teaches you not to get behind with your work. I do not feel that I'm just quite technologically literate yet. It's still a work in progress. (question 8) After this course, I am on my way to becoming a technological literate teacher.

PLE

Her PLE is way bigger than mine. She has her PLE arranged very nicely on her personal page. I really like how she uses a note taking program she found online. I like how she will post useful websites like the note taking site. Her PLE helps other people in gaining information.

Two Questions That Can Change Your Life

The questions that were ask were: What is my sentence and was I better today than yesterday? Both of these questions really made me think. I guess my sentence could be that I am striving to be the best that I can be. To answer the second question I am maturing and learning everyday. So I do feel I am better than yesterday.

Teaching Someone How to Use Technology

I chose to teach someone how to create form. I give six basic steps that will help you complete a form.

Interview

I interviewed Mrs. Dana Sheffield who is a special ed. teacher at Washington County High School.

1. Do you feel that you are technological literate?
Answer: I think I'm moderately comfortable with technology. I'm not the most knowledgeable though.

2. How do you feel about incorporating technology to Special ed. students?
Answer: I use the test prep which is online. The ACT prep is another tool that I find to be very beneficial to my students. Letting them use Microsoft Word helps them with their grammar and sentence structure.

3. Do you think technology would be beneficial for your students?
Answer: Yes

4. Do you think our school systems should emphasize technology more in the classroom?
Answer: Yes, but our school doesn't provide the funding for technology. We are a lecture based style of teaching.

5. What do you think is most important about teaching?
Answer: You have to genuinely care for your students. You have to be willing to listen to your students to understand them.

I commented on Aidan's blog. I said I enjoyed reading about his time at camp.
April 18 blog Assignment

When I first entered this class, I had know idea that technology was such a great tool for learning. I have always been intimidated by a computer. Having to blog, make presentations, podcast and many more I have become much more comfortable on a computer. In the future, I most definitely will incorporate blogging in my classroom. Blogging allows students to express how they feel about a topic. It also will make them more confident on a computer and better writers. The most important factor of blogging is that the students can get feedback on their blogs around the world. Podcast is still something I'm trying to get the hang of, but I hope to use it in the classroom as well. Dr. Strange post his weekly wrap ups on itunes which is a big help in making sure I am staying on task. When I'm a teacher, I plan on posting short lectures which will be helpful to students that might miss a day.

Dr. Seuss-The Zax

This video points out that change needs to happen in the classroom. Teachers need to face the facts that today's students require teachers to know more about technology. Teachers have to be willing to learn how to use it.

Ps 22

This kids are awesome. Their voices are beautiful. These kids obviously put a lot of effort in doing this song.
dearkaia.blogspot.com/2009/09/first-photo-essay.html This is Kaia's blog which was last weeks assignment. Her father posted the blog which got back many comments all over the world. That's what is so amazing about blogging. It gives you the opportunity to connect with people all over the world.

I commented on Paris's horse that she drew and listened to her video clip. I told her that she did an awesome job ,and I thought her drawing of the horse was beautiful.

Dear Kaia

This is a great blog. It made me want to go outside in the woods and just take a million pictures. Kaia took some beautiful pictures. The video was great in showing her pictures and explaining what the pictures are.

Kaia's father's blog

He explains how he was reading the book Last Child in the Woods. This book inspired him to take his daughter on an outdoor adventure. They both take their cameras and start taking pictures even though their surroundings aren't quite so beautiful. They take photos of things that may look ugly but can appear to be beautiful. He posted the pictures of their photos on Kaia's blog. Mr. Chamberlain's eight grade class left nice comments on her blog. Its amazing how people are connecting across the world.

I asked 5 questions about EDM 310. You can review the questions at this link spreadsheets.google.com/viewform?formkey=dC1UdnJpMXpTSzRUY2tVbGpIVFJnRVE6MA
Most of the people that answered the survey feel that they will have an A or B in the course. Only 4 out of 20 have used blogging before this class. The majority feels that EDM 310 would be better if the syllabus was more clear. You can review the results at this link https://spreadsheets.google.com/ccc?key=t-Tvri1zSK4TckUljHTRgEQ

Comment 4teachers 7-9

Week 7
Aaron Eyler is talking about teachers sometimes don't give a 100 percent in the classroom. I commented that its a teachers job to not only teach but to encourage students in the classroom.

Week 8
He is talking about the benefits of online classes. He says it would especially be good for the summer. I commented that it would make learning more independent for students.

Week 9 He says that we shouldn't blame today's youth for Social networking. Facebook can be used as a great educational tool. I commented that Facebook is a great way for reaching out worldwide about education. We should not resist it but embrace it.
Morgan Bayda and Dan Brown video

Like Morgan, I also feel cheated by my university because of long, boring lectures. Lectures can be beneficial ,but they never seem to change. Some of my college professors put information on a power point and tell us to take notes on it. Dan brings up a great point how in schools and universities, students memorize their notes and will receive a grade on how good you memorize "facts". He says "FACTS" will not prepare you for the real world. My favorite part of the video is when he says, "education is about empowering students to change the world for the better." Morgan and Dan both mention that collaboration with classmates is a wonderful tool for learning. I also believe that communication with classmates allows you to see their perspective on things.

Comment 4kids

I commented on Caitlyn's essay. Her essay is about how students need more time on projects. I commented that she provides reasons for this in every paragraph. I wrote that I agree with her.

ALEX
This is a great website that can be very helpful to future teachers. It lets teachers see what different kinds of lesson plans are out there. It is divided into six topics. They are: course of study, lesson plans, web links , search, podcast treasury and personal workspace. Teachers can listen to podcast done by other teachers. It also has a very helpful database.

I think this is a great tool for teachers to use to find new stuff to use in the classroom. The examples of lesson plans is one that I will definitely use. It is open for everybody to use.

ACCESS
This program is designed for students who want to take courses that are not offered at their school. Some students what to take college credit courses and this is one way to do so. This is a great opportunity for students to learn a higher level of education.

Although you have to pay for the courses, its still a great way to get some of your college courses done with. If students start taking college credit courses early in high school then that will be less they have to take in college.

Comment 4kids week 8

I commented on a Victor's blog. He wrote a poem about slavery. His poem was very good. I told him his poem was written very well.
Randy Pausch's Lecture
This was a very helpful video. Mr. Pausch brings some interesting stuff on how to work with students and push them academically in the classroom. In the lecture he talks about childhood dreams and how to achieve them. I found this part of the video to be quite inspirational.

He gives some helpful advice on setting goals. He tells the story on when he was younger he wanted to plat football. He achieved his goal and joined the football team. he later says that one of his coaches really gave him a hard time. Another coach suggested that he did that because he care about Randy. His coach just wanted him to succeed and be successful.

Teachers should push their students and enable students to accomplish their goals. Teachers should let their students know that they can do anything if they put they want it bad enough. Mr. Pausch brings up how teachers should set their expectations high. This allows the students to reach a higher level of education.

He ends the presentation by talking about how being an encourager is key to a students overall development. Teachers, parents and friends should be the best support for the individual. From watching this video, I've learned that encouraging is the best kind of educational tool.

This is how we dream 1 & 2

Richard Miller's videos brought some great ideas to the table. He gives useful tips on how technology can be used in the classroom. He addresses how writing in culture has changed. Communication is instantly possible with someone on the other side of the world.

Books are eventually going to be all electronic. Mr. Miller collaborates print documents, sound documents and visual documents. This use of technology is very intimidating t0 me. News papers are now embracing mode of composing print base and moving image base.

One part of the video that stands out to me is when Dr. Millers says "that Ideas don't belong to us individually but belong to us as a culture." Educators should distribute information freely to help other inspiring teachers and also students. I'm personally not ready for this level of technology that Dr. Millers is using but hope that one day I will be equip with the knowledge to use this in the classroom.

Networked Student

I thought this video was quite informing. This type of learning allows the student to independently learn and make a large PLN. This video talks about itunes U which lets you subscribe to podcast and other useful stuff. A students can subscribe to the best lectures in the world on itunes U.

By building a PLN, a student gets many views of the subject that they are learning. This just goes back to the old saying, "two heads are better than one." You can learn more information from many different resources. You can blog your ideas on the subject and help other students as well.

Although learning is becoming more independent, teachers are still needed. Teachers should should stay updated on new types of technology and help the students in acquiring a bigger PLN. Students should have the option of having a teacher there to help them along their learning experience.

Michael Wesch

I absolutely agree with Mr. Wesch. Mr. Wesch talks about how media has a huge impact on our culture. He talks about how generations overtime change. People learn new ideas, words, etc everyday. Today's world is amused by all the different types of media. Mr. Wesch brings up some interesting points in this video.

PLN

I am now a follower of Dr. Strange on twitter. This is my first time using twitter. I am still searching for some podcast to subscribe to. I really enjoyed the Kid Cast. I hope to find something that deals with history. I've subscribed to a couple of Kid Cast episodes.

Comment 4kids

I commented on the how to play tennis essay. The essay broke down the steps in playing tennis. It was a very helpful blog. I thanked him for writing such a great post.

Dr. Christie

Dr. Christie has some very useful ideas for today's teachers. I haven't had any experience when it comes to an ePortfolio. Electronic portfolio can be useful for students as well as teachers. It allows teachers to better know their students. It also makes turning in homework more convenient for student. Eportfolio allows teachers to post grades which will let the students know how their doing in the class.
I found Dr. Christies ideas on web design interesting. A class website can be a useful tool for teachers, students and parents. Parents can check the website to make sure that their child is keeping up with the requirements. It allows students to keep up with the assignments.

Itunes University

Itunes is a very easy and quick tool for students and teachers to use. Teachers can record lectures and post them on itunes. This will be helpful for students who were absent or just not paying attention. Itunes also allows podcasting.
Students can do podcasts on a topic given by the teacher. This requires the students to use technology and research for the podcast. Students can find educational videos, podcasts and many more useful stuff.

Duke University Ipod

In 2004 Duke University handed out over 1600 ipods to first year freshmen to encourage "creative uses in technology in education and campus life." CIT started an evaluation of the educational use of the ipods. They evaluated how the ipod was used as a tool for academics.

The students and teachers both benefited from the ipods. Classes that required digital multimedia reduced the dependence on lab and library hours. It allowed students to easily record class discussions. It helps the students to learn more independently.

Wikipedia

This blog is informing that the Wikipedia site is not a reliable source. In high school, I sited Wikipedia as a source, and my teacher quickly informed me that it is not a good source or site to get information. I always thought since it was the first site that came up that it was the best source. Although, Wikipedia is basically just another encyclopedia. It does have good information, but this blog points out how anybody can edit it at anytime. This makes it an unreliable source when writing research papers and essays.

What I've Learned This Year

Mr. MCclung's blog gives some very useful information when it comes to teaching students and also learning as a teacher. He gives a short background of his early teaching career. He explains how you can make out the perfect lessons plan, and they still might fall through. He describes how the students should be the main focus in the classroom. Teachers should listen to the students with an open mind.

Comment 4Kids

More Podcast videos

This was a very amusing video. Its very helpful to the students that the teachers upload their lectures onto itunes. Podcast can take learning to the next stage. It makes learning more fun for the student and allows them to broaden their technological skills.

These videos were very educational. After watching all of these videos, I feel like I am better prepared to start my podcast. I'm not as nervous as I was about doing the podcast.

Kidcast 62: Some thoughts on Podcasting

Dan Schmit starts of the podcast by saying he does not like it when teachers refer to video pod casting as "Vodcasting". He expresses that two are similar but quite different. In some ways, a video podcast takes more technological skills than a podcast. Audio podcasting still might be the best choice for some podcasters. Its definitely safer than a video podcasting. Audio podcasting makes the students use more descriptive words for their podcast.

KidCast: FETC Teachers Present: The Podship Huskerprise

I found this Podcast to be very entertaining. It takes you through on how to subscribe to their podcast on itunes. I am sure kids will enjoy listening to this podcast. This just proves how learning new teaching tools such as podcast can be quite fun for students. Pod casting is great way for students to express their creative side.

KidCast: episode 1

This episode is only 4:51 minutes and gives the advantages on pod casting. He explains how podcasting can be a great tool to reach out to teachers, students and parents. The reach of tools that we have now are very a effective way of learning. He also discusses how podcasts are a great way to transform your classrooms. This podcast is great for people like myself who are just starting to learn how to podcast.

KidCast: episode 4

This episode talks about a report on how we use the internet. This report centered on how teens are content creators on the internet. Over half the teens on the internet are providing their own creations online. Almost half of the teens on the internet are blogging which is related to podcasting. They are also using programs such as audacity that deal with the art of sound. He talks about how their is a fourth grade class who has started their own school news show on the internet.

Little Kids...Big Potential

These kids know more about blogging than I do. I was very impressed on how a little girl in the video clearly showed the viewers how to access their class blog. This just proves that teachers should stayed updated with learning technology. Even at an early age, these students are more comfortable with technology than I am. I thought it was really important how the young students provide positive feedback when commenting on a blog.

One year old uses iphone

I thought this video was pretty impressive. I don't have any idea even how to use an iphone. This video just proves how todays' youth are more acceptable to technology. This one year old can do more on this iphone then most people can. Kids are introduced to technology at a very early age. Teachers that use technology in the classroom should at least know just as much as todays' youth on how to use it.

Media Literacy in the First Grade

I found this video to be very educational for my benefit. I didn't even know how to blog until EDM 310. The teacher is doing an excellent job with these very young students. Kids know how to do technology at an early age which means teachers have to try to stay ahead of the students. This video just proves that teachers need to stay technologically literate.

A Vision of Students Today

Its very surprising to me how the average college kid spends most of his time. Students tend to sit way back in the room away from the board. Classes are so large thats its hard for teachers to get more personal with their students. Their is statement that only 18 % of teachers know their students by name. Most textbooks students buy for school are usually never opened.

In the video, some believe that technology will save us. Although, it seems as if social networks such as facebook and cell phones, have a tendency to distract students from concentrating on their studies. The students multi task to much. Students today have to balance time more than they did back then. If students would focus less on their labtop in class and keep their attention on the teacher then their grades will improve.

"Its Not About the Technology"

I absolutely agree with Mrs. Hines. As Mrs. Hines puts it, if students have not learned then no teaching has been done. Evolution is going on in the world of teaching. Teachers should also put an effort to learn new techniques of teaching. Teachers should try to relate with the students. They should put theirself in the students shoes. Every teacher should know their students and see their point of view.

There are many types of new gadgets that can be useful in the classroom. Without the proper teaching, technology is useless. If teachers take a more creative approach, they can draw the students attention. Also, the teachers should make sure every student understands the concept of each lesson. Teachers should learn new and interesting ideas and facts about the subjects they teach. With the proper teaching on how to use technology, "the possibilities are endless."

Is It Okay To Be A Technoligically Illiterate Teacher

In this day and time, teachers have to be comfortable teaching with the use of technology. You dont have to like technology, but you need to be willing to learn this tool. The world is constantly evolving so we have to try to keep up through technology.

First we need to determine what makes a teacher technologically illiterate. If teachers want to teach through technology then they need to be able to adequately use it. If teachers do not include technology in the classroom then students will not be prepared in the world today.

Gary Hayes Social Media Counter

I think the numbers are great on this media counter. The majority of students today are always on a computer. Blogging, facebook and other networks allow more ways for teachers to teach outside the classroom. This can have a bigger impact on the younger generation. Teachers today have to be able to use these networks as an advantage to improve ways of learning.

If I am going to be a teacher one day then I have to be able to use all types of tools of learning. Blogging can make learning more personal for students. Every student learns different. Not all students can learn by listening to the teacher in the classroom. By posting your lectures online, can help the students obtain more information.

Did you know

I found the "Did you know" video to be quite informing. It was surprising to see the statistics about the number of jobs a person will have by the age of 38. In addition I learned a lot of new information. I do agree with a couple of the clips. Although, I felt that some of the information gathered was stereotypical and biased.
I do question parts of the criteria in the video. I would like to know how does anybody know that 25% of India's highest IQ makes up the total population of the United States. Indeed, nobody can tell what really happens in the future. Computers can make estimates and people can make predictions, but how can they be considered a reliable source.

Mr. Winkle Wakes

This video was very enlightening to me. Mr. Needleman clearly displays the problems that are in our public school systems. Our world is constantly evolving with technology. The school systems aren't keeping up with our technological world. Mr. Needleman gets his point across by the example of Mr. Winkle sitting in the classroom looking at the old, dusty computer.
When Mr. Winkle enters the hospital, he was amazed by the new machines. He felt out of place at the hospital. Mr. Winkle then goes to a nearby school and is comforted by how nothing seems to have changed since he was in school. According to Mr. Needleman, school systems haven't changed much over the years. The school systems should focus more on computers to keep up with up with our futuristic society.

Vicki Davis: Harness Your Students' Digital Smarts

Mrs. Vicki Davis helps students from a small town in Camilla, GA connect to the world. She does not limit her teaching just through computers. She uses many other cool gadgets. I agree with Mrs. Davis' point that students do not all learn the same way. Pen and paper have a way of limiting students.
Students get more hands-on experience by Mrs. Davis' approach. By this technique, students can learn more independently. Mrs. Davis even says that the students learn so efficient that they end up teaching her something new about the program.

Sir Ken Robinson: The Importance of Creativity

Mr. Robinson is right that schools do have a way of looking down on creativity. Teachers sometimes limit a students creativity, especially through writing. Their teaching gets very repetitive. Creativity makes a positive impact on learning.
Education has a tendency to be all about work and no play. Our school systems do not put much emphasis on a students artistic side. Creativity helps find a person's true self. Teachers should always look for new ideas that will inspire students in today's world.
